How we count working days
The calculator starts from the days in the year, removes the days outside the working week you chose, then the public holidays that fall on a working day, counting each date once. Holidays come from each country's official calendar and, where they exist, from regional calendars: the UK bank holidays published by GOV.UK, the US federal holidays set by OPM, the French jours fériés, the Italian national holidays of Law 260/1949 and the fourteen yearly holidays of the Spanish Workers' Statute.
Holidays that fall on a weekend are not counted twice; where the law provides a substitute day (as in the UK and the US), the calculator includes it. The working week itself is bounded by working-time law: the Working Time Regulations 1998 in the UK and the EU Working Time Directive 2003/88/EC across Europe.
Sources: GOV.UK, bank holidays; Working Time Regulations 1998; U.S. Office of Personnel Management, federal holidays; service-public.fr, jours fériés; Italian Law 260/1949; Spanish Workers' Statute (art. 37); Directive 2003/88/EC. Calendars change every year (substitute days, regional decisions): always check the official source before using a count in a contract or payroll.
